  • I Refuse to be a Slave to the Internet – Here’s the Plan

    Jan 1

    Good Morning, Good Morning,

Today I am taking a stand. I will not feel guilty when my fellow classmates like Mark Austin, Joe Trueman and Valerie Davies masterfully manipulate their blogs and increase their traffic. You see, somewhere along the line, I Think, we [the students] have lost site of ourselves. We are addicted to our new internet adventure. I am too! But at what price?

Gary Simpson, Garry Parkes and Dean Holland write about the endless hours they put into their business’. And there are many others slaving away. Do you know what? One of these people will win the $1000.00 prize. Alex Jeffreys is really a brilliant man. His prize money kept many people working and building traffic throughout the holidays.

DO NOT misunderstand me! These very same people would have been working just as hard as they are even without the prize money, but something else happened too. They pushed a lot of the A.J. community through the holiday season where it’s easy to slack off. They blogged all over. They teamed up when other commitments needed to be tended too. They led by example.

I find the complexity and simplicities of this business leaves me with a gaping hole in the front of my face as my mouth hangs there – WIDE open.  I have asked myself time and time again…How do they do it? Sometimes I even ask, Why do they do it?

I must be a little slow because I finally realized what they’ve done.

    •  They manage their time.
    •  They set priorities.
    •  They journal everything.
    •  They stay organized.

I’m sure many of them type a mile a minute. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually look at my fingers when I type.

So that’s it. No one is a slave to the internet unless they choose to be. Not one of those heavy hitters is a slave because they get great pleasure from their accomplishments. They accomplish quite a bit because they have a plan, with a schedule and their priorities are set.

My plan may as well be myNew Year’s resolution too! I must face the greatest challenge for me and that is being accountable. I have to actually face my planner head on!

I have been spoiled for so many years. I had no need for a full blown planner. Sure I used a calander to keep track of appointments and important dates to remember, but I haven’t had to block my time precisely. In order to succeed and not feel guilty, I have to write my daily schedule. I need to include things like, how long I can spend on emails, how long can I spend on research or adding something new to my blog. When will I exercise? (Yea, yea, it’s another thing that will be on the New Years list).

For the record: This is really the hardest thing for me. I will have to keep you posted on my progress.

I must write a plan and stick to my plan or I will forever be a SLAVE to the Internet.

I’ll work up my plan over the weekend and get back to you on Monday. Maybe, I’ll even show you what my day will be like. And [students] as far as losing sight of ourselves… Well that’s just me. I was the one who was lost in the NO Plan land.

Garry has done it again with the second edition of the newsletter.

  1. Hello Renee,

Great post aka kick in the behind!

You’re not alone in the planning, or lack thereof, department.

Some days I write everything down and other days I remember at the end of the day that I hadn’t gotten to that part yet. So, I’m with you.

Writing down a few things to accomplish (the night before) is critical to getting things done. I’m working on my 30/60/90 day plan today, actually revising it from when I first worked on it after Module 1.

    Happy new year,
    Theresa

  2. Hi Renee,

It’s part of my plan to be a slave to the internet – at the moment. There is too much to do, and each day I do not do enough of what I would like to do, but I do enough for me, because I cannot do any more at the moment.

I take heart in the knowledge that many of the tasks that now take me 30 minutes will, in time, take much less time. And many of the first learnings that take 5 hours or so, puzzling, reading, re-reading instructions, getting frustrated, and finally getting there, only need to be learned once.

I am working on going through the process from unconscious incompetence to conscious competence (do you know that one? If not, remind me and I’ll write a post when I’ve come back from my F500 world travels offering my New Year’s gift).

Enough, Renee, I must away but before I go I wish you another wonderful day, and thanks for putting my name up there, in the face of your bloggees. That’s a thought. I didn’t know which word to use. If we are bloggers, are the people who come to look at our blogs bloggees? (As in so many other relationships: employer/ee; trainer/ee)

I have gone now, Captain Valster signing off, with a gentle breath to you.

    Valerie

P.S. You are so right. That Alex Jeffreys is so clever. And so are you. All those tags from this blog.

P.P.S. Hey, Renee. I thought we were friends. Not on your blogroll? Another case of too many tasks to be done?

  3. Hi Renee,

Thanks for the several mentions you have made about me here. I appreciate them very much and I’m sure the other guys do too.

I have made an internal committment to keep attacking blogs for the next two weeks. That means that I will have put 7 weeks into trying to bring everybody on as much as I can.

After that I will be doing some things for myself. In essence, I will be BUSTING OUT of the hive. I have already done a few little things outside but my prime concern is to give everybody inside a piece of me. Then my “pumping up tyres” inside blogland will be vastly reduced. I cannot keep this up forever because it is detrimental to my own growth. I could be doing so many things for my own personal benefit but I am not. Not yet.

After around the 15th January 2009 I will still commit to putting up two to three posts per week to nurture the bees inside the hive and I will still write my MOTIVATIONAL MOMENT piece for Garry Parkes Profit Pulling Project but then it is MY interests that I will be primarily concerned with.

I have left literally hundreds of comments on blogs and a vast majority of them have been quite long and answer the concerns of the blog. I see so many cut and paste comments like “Your blog is great. Add me to your blogroll” and I know who leaves these. If they keep doing stuff like that then they will be the LAST people that I will help as I view it as insincere and smacking of the ME FIRST mentality – something that we are being coached NOT to do.

Anyway, Renee, you are a good girl – you have kept my secret. Thank you. Nix knows about it too but I know that I can trust the Nixster.

    Regards

    Gary SIMPSON.

PS: Come over and have a look at the palm tree photo of my backyard. It’s in the “Palms” post put up at Gary-Land today.

Just wanted to stop by other students blog and introduce myself. I have added you to my blogroll. Don’t be too hard on yourself. I am a grandmother and will not allow my new internet business to come before my family. I am just getting back into the swing of things. I thing men have it easier. I am going to write about how women can start an internet business. Best of luck.

  5. Hi Renee,

I’m sure I sent a little response to this Plan, Slave to the Plan, and all the rest of this post but I just don’t see it. Apologies if it’s gone out into outer orbit, but I don’t intend to be such a slave that I will repeat it as the main reason to visit today is I’m on my turbo hopping mission to get round as many of the F500 that I can. It’s taking me for ever to get round everyone just to say hi, so I don’t want you to think I’m being rude bringing a standard message.

I hope I do not offend you as communication and generosity are what is driving this. If I wait for you to come to me, it might never happen. Thanks to all who have already visited Planet Valz and that includes you, Renee.

Firstly, my wishes to you for a Happy, Healthy and very Prosperous Year 2009.

Secondly, I want to give you a New Year present, but you need to go to http://daybydaymarketing.com/2008/12/choose-your-new-year-present/
and choose what you would like.

I would appreciate being added to your blogroll. I am happy to add you to mine when you come over and vote for your preferred gift.

P.S. You’re just about my last stop. I know you are an “R” and I was going A to Z, but I’m just checking and found a gap. There is an expression that says something about save the best till the last. If by any chance I’m totally pooped out with all this travelling, and this is a repeat, just don’t approve it.

  6. Hi Renee,

You must think I’m a basket case. Delete the above comment and this one because I have just seen the one I thought I had sent before although I just could not see it for looking in the first instance.

Have a good laugh, and I’m laughing with you. Not good to be mind frazzled with all this. Will go and get some fresh air.

    Valerie

  7. Hi Theresa,

I’m coming to see you. I would like to see what you actually wrote down. I really need to see how your daily schedule stacks up.

There are so many things that need to be done and I’m having trouble with the daily task list. I either schedule too much time or not enough time.

This is actually a good example of making a choice. I am suppose to be moderating comments and answering them. But now, I have to chose between writing down that I need to go to your blog and address this issue. Or just going there, because it takes just as much time to write the task as it does to just do it.

So here I come to your site.

    Mrs Renee Olson

  8. Valerie,

Oh how I wish I had the drive to make the sacrifices … maybe it is not a sacrifice for you. For me, the endless hours of the learning curve eats into some very precious events for me that I will not give up.

Which will certainly put me behind. But somehow, things will work out for me and I will be right up there where I want to be. I’ve spent too many years believing in “Never Settle” for anything less then the best. Life isn’t suppose to be hard. I have always been blessed and expect my blessings to continue.

That sounds kind of funny. Nikki must be onto something with “The Secret.”

If I master the SCHEDULE, I will win.

    If I don’t, then I am a loser!

We will be friends. I have put you on my list. Sorry I missed it before.

    Mrs Renee Olson

  9. Hello Gary,

Oh no! My status has dropped just a notch now that Nikki knows the secret.

I have to admit the insincerity you reference is running rampant. I would rather be days late to respond or post than to post or comment on the fly. You know the W.I.I. F.M.

I am very pleased to who found a great leader like you. It’s so important to have people brave enough to speak the truth and lead by example.

    Go Gary
    Mrs Renee Olson

  10. Hi Peggy,

I went to your blog. You seem to have your act together. I do hope you that article on women and the internet.

    Valerie,

I have to let all your comments show as is. I admire your thoroughness.

    Thanks,

    Mrs Renee Olson

  11. Hello Renee,
I’ll post an example of my schedule on my blog tomorrow. Thank you very much for stopping by to visit and see what’s going on in my world.

What can I help you with? Is there anything in particular that is still stumping you? I know about the learning curve. We’ll get around that cure together!

Tell me what I can do to help out,
    Theresa

  12. Hey Renee,

Hope all is well with you and hat you had a most wonderful Christmas and New. Its wonderful to hear that your also putting yourself up to be accountable for what you do and looking forward to seeing more of your progress as well. I’m glad I visited an active blog – it makes the day so much better

    All the best
    Nigel

  13. Nice work getting started and getting your blog setup. Im trying to get a complete list of all the students for my blogroll and to get to know everyone. Please email with your full name, link, and twitter link if you have one. Best wishes, Ross The Boss

  14. Hey Renee,

I’m not sure if I’ve been here before as you know there are so many AJ Students blogs that we need to visit it’s really hard to keep up with it. I’ll try not to be a stranger.

Here you write about having difficulty sticking to your plan. Well guess what, you’re not alone. I think I’ve written two blog posts about the same subject. It is difficult and it’s probably where I struggle most.

I do good for a week and then I stray off course. Then I slap myself around a bit and get back to the plan. A week later I’m wandering around again. I am absolutely convinced that if I stick to my plan I will be successful in my business.

I do know that when I do manage to follow my plan I am way more productive. This is no secret, as this is what Alex has been trying to drive into our thick skulls for three months now.

I always seem to come up with legitimate reasons why I’m off course but that’s just copping out because they are just cheap excuses. I need to be more disciplined and just stick to it. It’s easy here to write about this but to actually do it is another challenge.

    Later,
    Jeff Sargent

Jeff Sargent’s last blog post..Are You Spending More Time Watching Videos Than You Are Running Your Business?

  15. Hi Jeff,

You’re right. I can’t remember either if you’ve been here before. But better late then never.

Jeff it surprises me to hear that you struggle too with following a schedule because I’m on your list. I receive your emails regulary. You seem to be quite organized to me. But I can relate to the on course, off course path. I really admire people that work a schedule with ease.

Always looking for good role models. I haven’t been to your site lately because I follow you via email, but I will make it a point to catch up with you soon. I’d like to see if you’ve made any changes.

    Renee
