There’s a saying… “You Can Run but You Can’t Hide” From Gary Simpson. Ok I know, I know. That last part about Gary Simpson I just threw in because he’s called me out to the public. He’s challenged me to tell you 25 things about myself that most people don’t know.  That will seriously be a challenge for me because I usually say what’s on my mind. If I haven’t said it already, it’s probably NOT really that important to me. But here’s my list…

    1. I was one of the youngest (14yo) lifeguards for a Chicago Fire Department swimming pool. The pool was only 3 feet deep and they paid me $10.00 an hour to baby-sit the local kids while they were in the pool. That was 30 years ago. Best job I ever had!
    2. I missed the boat to the dot com era. Straight out of high school, I worked for the Byte Shop. Every night I would carry home a big clunky computer called a Kaypro. I would practice typing on that thing and just couldn’t figure out why people were so excited to use that HUGE machine instead of the smaller typewriter. OK, it was easier for me to correct my typing errors, but who would pay that kind of money for a machine that typed orange letters. I quit my job and moved to Florida, where I trained dogs for many years.
    3. I got my first dog from the pound when I lived in Florida. I had other dogs when I was a kid, but Jasmine was my first dog as an adult on my own. Several days after I brought her home, she still didn’t have a name. Then while I was sitting on the curb, in front of the laundry mat, I started humming the song, Oh… Jazz man. And there you go. The making of her female name. Jasmine.
    4. I love outdoor stuff. Boating, camping, hiking, and fishing off the pier are some of my favorites. I have never caught that sheep head that hangs around the pylon of the pier at Lake Worth beach, FL. But before my final journey, I will make it a point to go back and try again.
    5. I have a love/hate relationship with winter in Illinois.
    6. I would much rather be with the palm trees or on an island that’s warm.
    7. I love to travel with my kids and Mom. My husband, Jeff, let’s us take off for weeks at a time during his busy season. So, my Mom and I kind of map out a general itinerary, but wing it for the most part. On one of our trips we were gone for 5 weeks.
    8. I have never been stung by a bee.
    9. I once told my father to stand on a certain hill at the levee because his fishing line wouldn’t get so tangled in the weeds. Turns out that the hill was home to a mob of fire ants. Hummm… Pay backs? lol
    10. As a kid, we could ice skate in our backyard. My sister and her friend were skating and my mom made my sister include me. During our skating, we stopped to hang over the fence and watch the new people move in. Boy was I thirsty. I couldn’t go to the house for a drink because my sister and her friend would ditch me, so I licked the fence. Yep! I got stuck to the fence. When people came to help, in a panic they said they were going to spit on my tongue to get me off. I found that to be absolutely disgusting, so I pulled myself free. I’m very lucky that I can speak.
    11. I was a girl-scout leader for several years, even though at the time, I didn’t have kids. I still don’t have any girls. Just boys.
    12. As I get older, more stuff grosses me out. You should see me change a diaper… C’mon, it’s like watching a comedy show.
    13. I managed pet stores for about 7 years and now I’m allergic to everything, especially cats and ferrets.
    14. My mom is my best friend.
    15. I love to take a bath instead of a shower.
    16. I gave up my ticket to the super bowl in 1999 and the pro bowl in 2001, so my husband could have a REAL football fan with him at then game. Of course, I was in the water or sunbathing during the game. But every year (that we don’t have tickets) we have a great super bowl party at our house. FYI- Super Bowl was yesterday. It was Fantastic.
    17. For Christmas, my husband buys me things like cordless drills, tape measures and a sewing machine. One year, he bought me a necklace. I’m hoping that I can leave enough clues for this year, because I really want a new laser level. (Ryobi has a cool one)
    18. I now spend most of my summer days on Lake Shafer in Indiana. My boys and I like to go (what we call) island hopping (they’re really sand bars) to catch tiny frogs, little fish and sometimes snail hunting.
    19. I’m on a mission to create something for my friends and family.
    20. My boys do most of the housework. They have a chores board they follow every week. At 8 and 10 they’re getting pretty good at it.
    21. I think all kids should be given an allowance to teach them how money works, not because they do chores. Now raises… that’s a different story. My kids have been getting the same $3.00 a week for the past 3 years. I don’t think we’ll teach them about raises for a long time. We’re even stretching on the savings part because we tell them they have to put 1/3 into their piggy bank for long term savings. That a lot more than the typical 10% saver.
    22. I left the mortgage business in 1998 because it didn’t take a genius to figure out that the banks were setting people up to fail. I lost a phenomenal income, but I can sleep at night knowing I didn’t take advantage of a crappy system. I still keep my houselender@_______ email address, just in case there ever comes a day that the mortgage industry will function with a sense of integrity.
    23. I hate being on a schedule.
    24. I have a love/hate relationship with technology. I think technology has some serious flaws in the way it interferes with human life. I find it quite pathetic to watch teenagers constantly texting, surfing the internet or playing a video game. However, I owe my life to technology. My answer to the problem lies within our household rules. Yet, I find it sad to see the social skills of even our youngest children being squashed.
    25. I have a hard time staying on topic.

Now I’m sure many of you might have been looking for more of the business person to come out in the list above, but the business side is really an entity of my spoiled personality. I really have to tell you that I too can’t stick with the 25.

    1. I never settle for less then the best. I will wait and wait and wait until I can have the best. The best of course, is based on my own research of what I can live with and what I can not live without. And then I must go after it. Helen Reddy sang a song that I used to sing all the time when I was kid. Go to songfacts with this link and you’ll hear one my favorite female POWER songs http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2226

The butterfly might like this song.

    Talk to you again soon,

    Renee

  1. Well done Renee. I’ll come back later – after Alex’s webinar – with a better comment. Good fun, wasn’t it?

    Gary

  2. Hi Renee

Well done on getting your list completed and I love your selection.

We are all such complex individuals and 25 things does not make us who we are, but it’s great to have a glimpse into the lives of others and to learn from their experiences too.

I love the song (and I remember it as well) especially:

“If I have to, I can do anything”

I know that this was written from a feminist point of view, but actually I think that this can apply to every one of us undertaking this coaching with Alex Jeffreys as well as anything else we take on.

I generally won’t give up unless that is the sensible route to take after having tried first. Although it is tempting to say things aren’t working (I don’t have a single name on my list yet, nor have I made any money) I know that I can do it and will keep going until I do and then make it bigger and better!

“I’m on a mission to create something for my friends and family.”

This is what has motivated me too and this mission is not one I shall give up on lightly.

Anyway I’ve just completed my 25 things, so have reported back to Gary that my mission (or at least this part of it) is complete!

Do pop over and have a look. Thanks!

    Hilary

  3. Oh Hilary,

I know exactly what you’re saying. I applaud you. I am always amazed at people, especially women, who juggle by far more than I have to and still get things done in a timely manner.

I have to say that I’m starting to get ticked at the lack of progression. And perhaps a bit of doubt regarding the path I am traveling. I can say that I have started to implement a few other things. I have even started to write my first ebook.

I am on my way over to see your list… I can’t wait to grab a peek at you… more in depth.

    Renee

  4. No problem Gary…

It was fun. I am looking forward to see who else finishes the tag!
    Renee

  5. Hi Renee,

First – LADIES! Be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day. There are some exciting things happening soon. Chill. I know that sounds easy for me to say but… just hang in there.

Right – that off my rather large 52″ chest (oops there’s another little secret) – Renee – that was so funny. The fire ants – LOVED it. He must have been really lousy with you for that – literally.

I also really laughed at the “grossing out” comment. There was a lot of fun stuff there and I could go on and on.

I’m glad you liked this little exercise – as I remarked on Hilary’s blog, it was something that I hoped people would embrace in a viral nature but also because it gives everyone an opportunity to “show” themselves and give something to write about. I know some people are struggling big time with posting things and this just seemed to be the perfect opportunity for everyone to just go for it. To me there are a lot of benefits to and for everybody here.

You get an elephant stamp for completing your mission too – and your name will be entered on the Gazz-Man’s MISSION COMPLETE register. I have nailed it to the TEMPLE notice board for all to see. LOL!

    Gary

PS: The tools comment was bloody funny too!

  6. Renee,

I just left a message on Hilary’s blog about permalinks. It applies to you too. Go and check it out. It will improve your blog for Google and the other search engines.

    Regards

    Gary

  7. Hi Renee

Thought I’d pop over as I haven’t for a while and what a treat to find out lots about you. I might do the list as well but it could be very boring, I’ll think about it. I could start with ‘My name is Wendy and the meaning of my name is Friend or Friendly.’

This IM business is tough coz I haven’t made any money yet (and things are getting desperate). Will press on tho.

    Wendy

  8. Hey Gazzaaaaaaa,

You are always an inspiration to the group as well as our teacher. I will find out what is up with permalinks at Hils place. You readers would be wise to check it out too.

While you’re roaming around, Gary has some outstanding stories you should read.

    Thanks Gary,
    Renee

  9. Hi WENDY!

Gosh, we haven’t typed at each other for a while and yes you will have to write your list of 25 because I tag you. I didn’t tag anybody in my post. I have four more to name.

I know the feeling of frustration and I am working on a couple of things outside the class that should change that and the money. I will share with you as soon as I get it up.

    Renee

  10. Hi Renee,
I hadn’t heard of this list thing yet.

I love your list; it’s written creatively and gives us a much better idea of who you are; funny, compassionate, articulate, down to earth, friendly, maybe a bit mischievous.

    All the best,
    Theresa

  11. Theresa,

I have to be careful around you…. Mischievious? Maybe, but I didn’t know it was a fire ant hill. I suppose I should have been suspicious of the hill because earlier that day I was walking my new pet Palmetto Bug on a leash and a native Floridian informed me it was a cockroach. Again, how was I suppose to know… they weigh 15 pounds and fly. LOL

You might be too perceptive of me. My sense of humor is harmless!

Thank you for your kind words of praise. I shall try to live up to them.

I tag YOU, Theresa as my number 2. Oh… I have to go back and see if Gary tagged you first. But if he didn’t, you’re my tag. I might have to check if Hilary got you.

    See ya’

    Renee

  12. Hi Renee

Just popped back to see how things are going here and to say thanks for your comments at my blog.

I can see that you, me and Wendy are something of kindred spirits – perhaps there is something we can collaborate on – I don’t know what yet, but I’ll put my thinking cap on.

Yes I need to start earning the money too, so need to begin working on some of the ideas I have and doing my research.

However, one thing I will say is that I will not compromise my integrity in what I do – I will not push just anything for sale, that is not my way.

Look forward to building on this with you.

    Hilary

  13. Hilary,

That is exactly how I feel too. No compromise. I do have a plan though… maybe I can email my plan to you. First, I have to write it out. I did send it to http://coleencook.com this morning. So let me see what she critiques. She’s a tough cookie with good judgement.

    We’ll talk soon,
    Renee

  14. Hi Renee

Yes please do email me your plan after Coleen has had a look. I’m sure that Coleen will give you a hand and a great response.

I’ve been listening to some motivational CDs and the one I was listening to today was saying that we should not try to copy the route that someone else was taking but to walk our own path. This is the only way to move forward and is the way I intend to go.

But it’s good to have companions along the way. Thanks for your company.

    Hilary

  15. Hi Renee

Thanks for tagging me, I’d better get my thinking cap on. I’m intrigued to know what else you’re working on and look forward to hearing about that.

And to respond to Hilary’s comment on this post, would love to collaborate on something with you guys. Even though we have the F500 and all, I do feel quite alone as well on this IM project. I don’t want to get disillusioned or lose motivation as I know this is a long term thing. And I have really only just started. OK, enough moaning.

    Wendy

  16. Hilary,

I to usually walk the less traveled path; however, I am also a believer in not reinventing the wheel. So now you know why this journey is rather difficult. I suspect you are a strong independent thinker. I also suspect you may feel some information overload. And I’m hoping you agree that there is just WAY TOO MUCH CRap out there, just waiting to suck you in and take your money. Ahem, sorry, I got a little carried away.

It is my nature to be a crusader. To seek out an honest path to wealth and to find something that I’m truly interested in. I think it’s important for us to understand where we fit in… in the world of the web. Like Linda [Q] said in the audio we can’t have an empty store front. Do you know what your product is? I wasn’t exactly sure which direction I wanted, but it’s starting to come into focus.

It’s easier to find a path when you know what your product is.

    Renee

  17. Hi Wendy,

You bet I’m gonna check to see if you put your cap on.

It would be my pleasure to share my thoughts with you. I will cc you when I email Hilary.

    Renee

  18. Hi Renee & Wendy

I think we are all on the same track so let’s support one another as we go.

I know the area I’m looking at and will spend a bit of time over the next few days doing some research. When I have found something that I feel comfortable with I’ll let you know.

I look forward to your email Renee and Wendy feel free to contact me too.

Things are pretty busy at the moment and I’m very tired so sorry if I don’t contact you much for a little while – I haven’t forgotten you!

    Hilary

  19. Hi Renee,

Here is the permalink code that I spoke of a few days ago:

    /%post_id%/%postname%.htm

Paste that into your permalink page under “custom settings” then save and watch what happens to your URL’s. Hey presto!

Instead of having, for this page, this:

    http://marketingwithrenee.com/?p=79#comments

You will get, instead (something like) this:

http://marketingwithrenee.com/I-Am-Woman-by-Helen-Reddy with a html code on the end of it.

That will allow you to have a much better indexing by the bots and spiders and mites etc of the search engines – ie you will be MUCH better indexed. Please inform Hilary and any others that you see.

Just a little tip from the “TEMPLE” – LOL!

    Regards

    Gary Simpson

  20. Gary,

Thanks for following up regarding the permalinks. I cut and pasted the code. I hope it’s in the right place. And thanks again for your help with the .html.

It’s so cool to work with people like you’
    Renee

  21. Hi Hilary,

I’ve been putting out a few fires of my own. You know we’ve all kind of reached the point that it’s time to really tweak our systems and take the plunge.

    Thanks for your patience,
    Renee

  22. Hi Renee

Thanks for your support and also thanks to Hilary.

Also thanks to Gary – I will copy and paste the permalink code (I didn’t even know what a permalink was!).

    All the best
    Wendy

  23. Hi Renee

Know the feeling so lots of patience required and given.

I’ve installed the permalinks thing. It actually worked this time. I did try installing it when I first saw it on Thomas Skavhellen’s blog back on 27th December, but it just wouldn’t work. I tried it again when I upgraded Wordpress and it still wouldn’t work, but it did this time.

    Why?

I don’t know but it works.

I was actually thinking about another issue when Gary said permalinks – the problem I have that when I install a text box – in this case adding the Twitter info – it sends all of the following information down to the bottom of the page. I had it fixed for my sign in box, just need to get it done again now, so must remind myself who helped me last time. It just hasn’t been top of my priorities.

    Speak soon.

    Hilary

  24. Hi Wendy,

I didn’t know what permalinks were either. Linda Caroll put up some great info pingback http://lindacaroll.com/web/wordpress-pinglist/comment-page-1#comment-1277

    Good Luck
    Renee

I’m back again! I’ve just put up my 25 things post, so that you can all find out a little more about the crazy world of the Purple Minxy Witch. Thanks for the note regarding the PPP newsletter as well, much appreciated!
